Arthritis Treatment

Many animals—not just older ones—will deal with arthritis during their lifetime. Though it is a degenerative joint condition, the good news is that there are many treatments available to ease the symptoms and slow its progress.

What are the warning signs of arthritis in animals?

  • Less interested in physical activity
  • Walking or running more slowly
  • Difficulty getting up, sitting, lying down or cleaning themselves
  • Reluctance to go up or down stairs
  • Stiffness, limp or tremor
  • Aggressiveness when joints are touched

Keep in mind that symptoms will vary from one animal to another and that only a veterinarian can make a diagnosis after a thorough examination of your pet. These symptoms do not necessarily mean that your pet has arthritis.

    What causes arthritis?

There are many different causes for arthritis, including:

  • Inherited genetic traits
  • Accidents
  • Being overweight, which puts pressure on joints
  • Repetitive, high-intensity exercises that prematurely wear down joint cartilage.

Which arthritis treatments can help my pet?

There are many different treatment options, depending on your pet’s specific needs and how they have responded to past treatments. Your veterinarian can tailor a treatment program to your pet that may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory/pain-relieving medication
  • Injections
  • Omega-3 rich diet
  • Dietary supplements
  • Weight management
  • Low-impact physical activity and aquatic exercises
  • Physiotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Joint massage
  • Musculoskeletal therapies
