We also care for birds and advise on their diet, beak maintenance and behaviour.

At Hôpital vétérinaire Animo-Vet, we also care for birds. Come see us for advice on your bird’s behaviour, diet and beak and wing care.

Signs that your bird is sick and needs to see a veterinarian

Birds hide their health problems well, but you should consult a vet as soon as you notice any of the following:

  • Decreased appetite or decreased/increase water intake
  • Changes in stool (appearance/less frequent)
  • Altered, abnormal breathing
  • Bleeding
  • Vomiting or regurgitation
  • Nasal discharge
  • Runny eyes
  • Less singing
  • Ruffled feathers

Should I have my pet bird examined after buying it?

It’s very important to have your new feathered friend examined to make sure it’s healthy, to get advice on diet and training, prevent feather-plucking (i.e. when a bird plucks out its own or another bird’s feathers), and more. We also recommend getting blood work done to see if your bird is carrying any viruses or bacteria.

Does my bird need dietary supplements?

If your bird eats a pellet-based diet, then they don’t need any supplements. Otherwise, you will need to mix vitamins with their favourite food and give them mineral blocks.

What are the best fruits and vegetables to give my bird?

Darker foods are generally the most nutritious.

AVOID these fruits and veggies: cooked asparagus, avocado, lemon, iceberg lettuce, lime, lychee, fruit pits, onion, raw potatoes, rhubarb and tomatoes.
