I suspect my pet is intolerant or allergic to its food. What should I do?

Pets can suffer from food allergies. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include skin issues such as itching, licking, or biting. Some pets may also experience digestive problems. These symptoms can arise at any age, regardless of whether a new food has been introduced. During a veterinary consultation, we’ll plan an exclusion diet for 8 to 12 weeks, after which we’ll reassess the situation.

What are the most common allergens?

  • Milk-based products
  • Beef products
  • Wheat, corn, and soy cereals
  • Chicken
  • Eggs

What foods are difficult to digest or dangerous for my pet?

Poultry bones, chocolate, mushrooms, coffee, nuts, grapes, potatoes, and onions should be avoided entirely. The salt, sugar, and fat content of some table foods can also cause stomach upsets and contribute to diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. For treating your pet, it's best to choose treats specifically designed for them.
