Dermatology

Proper skin care strengthens immunity and overall well-being.

During their lives, some animals may experience skin or coat problems that require a dermatological consultation with your veterinarian. Contact us today to schedule a consultation to identify the source of the problem and begin an appropriate treatment plan.

What are the signs or symptoms of a dermatological problem?

While each animal may show different signs of a dermatological issue, the following are common symptoms:

  • Itching
  • Excessive or intensified licking
  • Redness
  • Pimples
  • Scabs
  • Dandruff
  • Hair loss, sometimes down to the skin
  • Dull or thinning coat
  • Unusual body odours

What are the most common causes of skin disorders in pets?

Skin issues in pets can stem from infections caused by fungi, food or environmental allergies, parasites (such as fleas or mites), bacteria, or hormonal imbalances, among other factors.

What tests can be performed to confirm the diagnosis?

Our veterinary team may conduct cytology (cell sampling), fungal cultures, blood tests, allergy tests, biopsies, or dietary elimination trials. Based on the results, a tailored treatment plan can be developed.

What is dermatophytosis?

Dermatophytosis, commonly known as ringworm, is a highly contagious fungal condition. An animal can carry this disease without showing visible skin lesions. An affected animal often has circular red patches on the skin, sometimes with itching. It is crucial to treat any affected animal promptly, as ringworm can spread to humans (zoonosis). The entire environment must be thoroughly disinfected, and treatment should continue to completion.
